How a Katy Family Planned Their First Backyard Pool
Published July 1, 2026

When a family off Roesner Road in Katy decided to build their first pool, they did what most people do: they started with a hundred saved photos and no idea what any of it would cost. Their story turned into a good roadmap for anyone planning a backyard build, so we wrote down the steps that mattered most.
Start With the Build Type, Not the Shape
Before you fall in love with a photo, decide how the pool will be built. Vinyl-liner is the lowest first cost. Fiberglass installs fastest and skips plaster forever. A custom gunite pool can take any shape or depth you want but takes longer to build. This family wanted a freeform shape with a tanning ledge, so gunite was the clear fit, and everything else followed from that one choice.
Set a Real Budget Early
A pool is a serious investment, often 60,000 dollars or more once you add a deck and a spa. The family set a firm number first, then designed to it. That order matters. It is far easier to trim a water feature from the plan than to find out halfway through the build that the budget was never going to cover the stone deck they had pictured.
Do Not Skip the Safety Code
New pool owners are often surprised by how much of the budget goes to things you cannot see. A code-compliant barrier at least 48 inches tall, a self-latching gate, anti-entrapment drain covers, and NEC 680 bonding are all required, and for good reason. With small kids in the house, this family was glad the safety work was built into the plan from day one rather than treated as an upgrade.
Plan the Deck and the Equipment
The pool shell is only part of the project. The family chose a travertine deck for how it stays cool underfoot in a Katy summer, and a variable-speed pump to keep the monthly energy cost down. A saltwater system made the water feel softer for the kids. These choices are easy to make once the shell is settled, and they shape how the backyard actually feels to live in.
Get a Real On-Site Visit
The best move for any build is a proper on-site design meeting. It turns a folder of photos into a plan with a real number, and it surfaces yard access, drainage, and setback questions before they cost you. That is exactly where this family started, and their finished pool has been the center of the backyard ever since.
