Four Cities Wearing One Name

Curiouslyvegradio works on garage doors in Huntington Beach and nothing else. We are on Main St in the 92647 ZIP, which puts us within twenty minutes of every part of the city we serve.

The thing that took us the longest to learn, and that we now build the whole business around, is that a garage door in this city is not one problem with one answer. Where the garage stands changes what breaks, how fast it breaks, and whether spending money on the existing door is sensible or wasteful.

What the Map Actually Tells Us

Out on the Huntington Harbour islands, Admiralty, Davenport, Gilbert, Humboldt and Trinidad, the doors carry the heaviest salt load in the city. Springs pit, cables corrode from inside the strand, end bearings seize. Many of those garages are also built around a boat, so the doors are tall and wide and heavy, and spring sizing has to be right rather than close.

Downtown, on the numbered streets between Pacific Coast Highway and Palm Ave, the garages open onto alleys. The salt is still there but the dominant damage is mechanical. Mirrors, bumpers, delivery vans and tight turns crease bottom sections and bow track. Headroom is often short because there is living space above.

Along Bolsa Chica St and the streets facing the wetlands, the enemy is grit. Onshore wind carries sand into the bottom track and into roller bearings, and a door that sounds like it is dying is usually just full of beach.

East of Beach Blvd the environment calms down and age takes over. Those tracts went up in the late sixties and early seventies, and a lot of them still have the original one piece tilt up doors on jamb hardware, with openers that predate photo eye entrapment protection.

The Line We Take on Spending

Sand is a cleaning job. Alley damage is a repair. Corrosion is a hardware refit, and only becomes a new door when the panels themselves have gone. Age on its own is not a reason to replace anything, but a tilt up door swinging into a driveway with no safety gear behind it usually is.

We will say no to work. If your door is gritty and somebody has quoted you a replacement, we would rather clean it and be the people you call in five years.
